Acoustic Wave Therapy

  • Promotes healing of injured tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissue
  • Rebuilding Damaged Tissue Reduce Inflammation and Pain
  • Stimulate Joint Lubrication

What is Acoustic Wave Therapy?

Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT) has originally been used to treat chronic pain in joints, muscles, and other painful injuries. Clinical evidence shows that patients suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain and receiving AWT, had significant improvement in mobility, healing, and less pain after only a few treatments.

After a series of treatments, AWT may help

  • Restore connective tissue
  • Improve muscle tone
  • Promote lymphatic drainage (elimination of toxins/waste)
  • Improve blood flow/circulation
  • Promote increased production of collagen
  • Reduce symptoms associated with conditions such as plantar fasciitis, trigger finger, carpal tunnel, tendinitis, etc.

How AWT Works?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) also known as Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT), is an outpatient treatment used to reduce chronic pain in joints and muscles. AWT refers to the energetic, concentrated, sound waves which create vibrations that can improve connective tissue in joints, muscles, tendons, bones, and even nerves.

The actual AWT process occurs when directed sound waves cause micro-tears in the connective tissues. These minor tears cause the body to increase collagen in the affected area as a means of healing. This new collagen is able to go to work and restore/heal muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and nerve tissue. The healing area replaces the tissue with a denser, rejuvenated frame (collagen fibers), that is firmer, more dense, and healthier. Based on individual evaluation and desired results, the appropriate pressure, number & intensity of treatments will be determined by the trained practitioner. By applying the correct amount of pressure and executing the correct number of acoustic waves at frequent intervals, the underlying tissues can be regenerated.

What are the benefits of Acoustic Wave Therapy?

AWT has shown to benefit:

Arthritis, Tendonitis, Neuropathy, Back Pain, Trigger Points, Shoulder Pain, Rotator Cuff Injuries, Biceps Tears, Tricep Injuries, Elbow Tendonitis, Carpal Tunnel, Hip problems, Hamstring Injuries, Knee Pain, Meniscal Tears, Achilles injuries, Plantar Fasciitis, Heel Pain, Turf Toe and much more.

What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine is the new way to treat pain. It uses platelet-rich plasma or stem cells to amplify our natural healing process in the places it is needed most in order to restore the structure and function of damaged tissues and organs.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy?

Blood is made of red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Platelets are known to be responsible for blood clotting and initiate healing. In the last 20 years we have learned that when platelets are activated in the body, they release healing proteins called growth factors. There are many growth factors with varying responsibilities, however cumulatively they accelerate tissue and wound healing. After increasing the baseline concentration of these platelets, we can deliver a concentrated dose of growth factors that can dramatically enhance tissue recovery.

How is a PRP Procedure Performed?

By using your own blood, specially prepared platelets are re-injected into the treatment area. The platelets release “growth factors” that lead to tissue healing by concentrating the platelets:
  • Increase the release of growth factors
  • Promote the growth of collagen and elastin
  • Allow healing of tendons, ligaments, muscles, cartilage, and joints. PRP is then injected into the desired areas, leading to a local desired inflammatory reaction that causes the formation and deposition of new collagen and controlled healing from active biological proteins that are found in white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. The new collagen matures, tightens, heals, and strengthens the damaged tissues.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy FAQ

Dr. David Suarez answers your most commonly asked questions below.

This treatment takes place in any of our clinics (see location page as our clinic list grows). Total time is less than an hour and you’ll be able to continue your day immediately following care. Do not take any anti-inflammatory, vitamins/supplements, or alcohol one week prior to the injection and one week after as this may limit the treatment benefits, and avoid wearing makeup for your treatment.

Although uncommon, the risks include those signs/symptoms associated with an injection including

  • Swelling at the injection site
  • Temporary increased pain & stiffness in the injected area
  • Mild pain at the injection site or area injected.
  • Infection
  • blood clot
  • nerve injury
  • skin discoloration
  • calcification
  • scarring
  • loss of fat to the area and allergic reaction
